Location:
Wanaka lies at a crossroads, between the east and west coasts of New Zealand and between the central region of the South Island and the cooler, more southern landscapes of Milford Sound and Fiordland. The geography is impressive, with two lakes (Lake Wanaka and Hawea), a backdrop of mountains (the Southern Alps, including Mt Aspiring) and big rivers (The Clutha, Hawea, Makarora and Matukituki). The town is on the edge of one of New Zealand's largest wilderness regions, Mt Aspiring National Park.
