About the property
This fine residence was built in 1891 for Captain Frederick Gibson whose daughters founded the Miss Gibson's Private School for Girls. Later called Rangi Ruru, Maori for 'wide sky shelter', the property accommodated family and up to sixty students over three decades.

More than a hundred years after it was built, the Charlotte Jane has been magnificently restored to provide luxury bed and breakfast accommodation.

Each room is individually decorated, with fine furnishings in keeping with the grandeur of the house. A beautiful garden, blending native trees with rhododendrons and roses, frames this Merivale landmark.

Alexander Lawrence fine-dining restaurant is the new addition to The Charlotte Jane offering the finest of New Zealand food and wines. There are also four other dining areas in the property including The Victorian Breakfast Room - where breakfast is served at your leisure, The Garden Patio - outdoor dining by the waterfall, The Victorian Conservatory - with candlelit dinners everyday and The State Room - a romantic and private function room.
